2010 Text Adventure
COLECO
2010: The Text Adventure Game is the second game based on the 1984 science fiction film 2010: The Year We Make Contact after the console game 2010: The Graphic Action Game. The player takes the role of a major in the United States Space Corps, a member of the expedition sent to investigate the fate of the Discovery space ship. The problem is that Discovery is close to crashing into Jupiter's moon Io and the player has to travel to it in a Russian exploration vessel called the Leonov. The task up ahead is to board the Discovery and repair it before the gravitational forces of Io pull it away.
Unlike most text adventure games, 2010 is not controlled by typing in verb-noun commands. Instead the player uses the keyboard's six function keys (or smart keys as they are called on the Adam) to interact with the world. The commands that are shown are context sensitive and depend on the situation, where the player is and what previous actions have been made. Moving around is done by the directional key, and by pressing return the examine menu appears. It consists of four options; to examine the area, its equipment, its items and any pods that are present. By pressing the home key the player is able to camp. Camping allows the player to organize items (picking up, dropping, examining them etc.), check life support (status of food, water, rest, power and medical supplies), recharging power and supplies, performing medical treatment and removing the spacesuit. By successfully performing various activities the player earns points. The current score is shown every time the player ends camping.

Bradford is a text formatting and printing utility developed in the 1980s by Aaron Contorer for enhancing output on dot-matrix printers, enabling near-letter-quality (NLQ) text production through graphics-mode rendering and multiple passes per line.[1] Designed primarily for CP/M operating systems, with later versions available for MS-DOS, it processes text files from various editors by interpreting embedded formatting commands to apply fonts, spacing, and styles.[1][2]
The program supported a range of printers, including Epson FX/RX and MX models with Graftrax, Gemini 10/15X, and IBM dot-matrix printers, but was incompatible with Okidata models.[1] Key features included eight built-in fonts—such as Typewriter (with serifs), Modern (squared lines), and Vanilla (rounded sans-serif)—with options for mixing fonts on a page, adjustable character widths from 1/20th to 5/20ths of an inch, boldface in three intensities, underlining, italics, and support for proportional or fixed spacing.[1] Users embedded commands (similar to WordStar's, like ^B for bold or ^S for underline) directly in text files, with customizable command characters for compatibility across editors; additional capabilities encompassed margins, page numbering, line centering, full justification, and integration with graphics tools like PrintMaster.[1]
Bradford operated interactively, prompting users through about 16 setup questions per run (e.g., printer type, file selection, font choice) without an installation process, and included a draft mode for faster printing alongside its slower NLQ mode (e.g., approximately 14 minutes for two pages on a Gemini 10X).[1] It came with Bradcon, a companion font-editing tool for customizing characters, and was distributed as public domain software with basic instructions, though a $15 manual was required for advanced features like multi-font lines.[1][2] Initially sold commercially by Contorer's firm, Concom Enterprises, for $39 plus shipping, it transitioned to shareware-like distribution, earning praise in 1980s computing newsletters for its versatility and affordability compared to daisy-wheel alternatives.[1] Limitations included no mid-setup cancellation, rough italics in larger sizes, and visible dots in curved fonts, but it handled errors gracefully without aborting prints.[1]

The plot involves the eponymous martial artist advancing from chamber to chamber in a wizard's tower, seeking to claim infinite wealth and the secret of immortality. There are twenty chambers, each represented by a single screen with platforms and ladders. To progress, the player must collect a number of lanterns suspended from various points in the chamber.
Most chambers are guarded by two mobile enemies; The Ninja, who attacks with a "bokken stick"[8] and The Green Yamo, a large unarmed warrior, visually styled as a sumo wrestler but attacking with punches and "crushing kicks". On platforms with sufficient graphics support, Yamo's skin is actually pictured as green, though in cover art he has a natural human skin tone.
A multiplayer mode allows a second player to control Yamo, or to allow two players to alternately control Bruce. If the player playing Yamo is inactive for a certain time, the computer takes over. The Ninja and Yamo are also vulnerable to the screen's dangers, but have infinite lives so they always return; whereas Yamo is consistently identified as a single person, one version of the manual implies that each reappearance of the ninja is a new individual, replacing the previous one.

This game is my first in 43 years since the day I bought my ColecoVision / Coleco Adam computer. I still own it today, together with many options and expansions I collected over the years.
My love for this hardware runs so deep that I even wrote my own emulator and I am currently working on a hardware project to bring the Adam back to life.
In the meantime, I kept myself busy with the wonderful program created by Oscar Toledo Gutiérrez — his CVBasic system allows us to create ROMs in a very structured way. A fantastic tool!
This game is still in an early stage. If anyone would like to contribute graphics or music, it would be greatly appreciated. Of course, contributors will be credited in the game titles.
This is an open-source project, and you are free to use the software as you wish to learn from it.

OpenFILER V3.0 with OpenRECIPE (D/DP) $14.95 Will read a SmartFILER or RecipeFILER data base and convert it to a sequential ASCII file by re-writing the records onto a new tape or disk. The new sequential file can then be read by SmartWRITER, SmartBASIC, or brought into CP/M or T-DOS through the CP/M ADAM.COM utility or the T-DOS improvement thereof.
Once in the T-DOS or the CP/M environment, the file can be directly read by dBASE, WordStar, or other wordprocessor or editor application programs. Your new sequential file can even be sent to another computer via the modem.
OpenFILER V3.0 also provides: full recovery of the XBIT field, temporary delete and un-delete of individual records, ability to convert only a specified range of records, replacement of "text field" commas, (for use with BASIC or dBASE); and much more.

SmartBASIC 1.x was a major rewrite of the SmartBASIC 1.0 interpreter for the Coleco ADAM computer, and it provided the programmer with around 40 new commands and functions. This version of the interpreter was developed by Randall Hyde of Lazer Microsystems.
Some of the features and improvements included in the rewrite were:
* Performance enhancements: SmartBASIC 1.x was faster and more efficient than the original version, which improved overall performance.
* Enhanced graphics and sound support: The rewrite included expanded capabilities for handling graphics and sound, allowing for more advanced programming.
* Increased compatibility with Applesoft BASIC: SmartBASIC was already largely compatible with Applesoft BASIC, and the rewrite likely improved this compatibility further to allow programmers to more easily port programs.
* File handling improvements: Some changes were made to how the interpreter handled file operations, particularly on disk-based systems, which corrected errors and improved functionality.
